Featured Artist: Richard W. Kinnaird

This month, we welcome the work of the late Richard Kinnaird. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Kinnaird lived in Chapel Hill, NC, until his death in 2013. He studied at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Carleton College and the Art Institute of Chicago. He received his MFA from University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. Kinnaird, who taught teaching, painting and drawing at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for 39 years. As a modernist abstract painter, Kinnaird was consistently thoughtful of how shape, line, texture, and color blend and interact. His striking large scale works often contain optical illusions, playful patterns, and various collaged elements. Kinnaird’s work has been exhibited in over 25 group and invitational shows, including University of Georgia, Ackland Museum of Art at UNC Chapel Hill, Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, Duke University in Durham, Weatherspoon Art Gallery in Greensboro, and East Carolina University in Greenville, NC.
